How to Have Fun and Stay Safe During Your Favourite Summer Activities
What are your favourite summer activities in Ontario? Maybe you visit Sauble Beach or Muskoka to enjoy sun and fun on the sand. On the other hand, maybe you prefer to hike and explore in Pinery Provincial Park or Georgian Bay Islands National Park. Ontario is filled with summer attractions from amusement parks, zoo, and sporting events to museums, festivals, and fairs. There is something for everyone to enjoy during the summer in Ontario.
However, many people are injured during the summer. You can reduce your risk of being injured by practicing a few safety tips for summer activities.
Safety Tips for Summer Activities
Master Water Safety
Whether you are enjoying the beach, lake, or a water park, you need to be safe when participating in water activities this summer. Always wear sun protection, including sunscreen, sunglasses, and hats when outside during the summer. Because drowning is one of the leading causes of death for children, teach children how to swim at an early age. Use life jackets or floaties for children. Always supervise children and young teens whenever close to water. If you are on a boat, always wear life jackets.
Sun Protection
Infants, young children, and senior adults are especially susceptible to heat-related illnesses. When you are out in the sun this summer, remember to take plenty of water and take frequent rests in a shady area. Schedule your outdoor activities for early in the morning or evening when it is cooler. Know the signs of heat stroke and how to care for someone who is suffering from heat stroke. In addition, be familiar with the signs of sunburn and how to care for sunburn.
Preventing Injuries
Injuries can ruin a great summer. Unfortunately, there are thousands of injuries each year because of summer activities. To prevent summer injuries always check playground equipment to ensure it is well-maintained. Always supervise children closely when around fall hazards and in other dangerous situations. When riding amusement park rides, ensure safety harnesses and other safety devices are securely fastened before the ride begins. Follow all safety instructions given by instructors or leaders. Before embarking on a summer activity, research the activity to ensure you are familiar with all safety precautions.
Learn First Aid
It is an excellent idea to take a first aid course to learn the basics of first aid. From how to treat burns and broken bones to how to bandage wounds, a first aid course can help you provide life-saving care until emergency personnel care arrive. In addition to a first aid course, take a special course to learn how to perform CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation). You may save someone’s life because you took the time to learn CPR.
What to do If You Are Injured This Summer
If you or someone you are with is injured this summer, try to remain calm. It is easy to give into panic, but giving into panic means you cannot think clearly. Immediately call for emergency assistance and ask someone to contact emergency services for your location. Most attractions have an emergency plan in place for situations like yours. Until help arrives, follow your first aid training and follow the instructions given by emergency personnel by telephone. The key to remaining calm is being prepared. Don’t skip the first aid class — being prepared really does make a difference.
