Girl Killed in a Recent Soccer Match by Falling Goal Posts
With kids and parents a like being inspired by the recent World Cup in Brazil, you may notice a few more kids playing with soccer balls outside at the park. However, you would never expect dangers from some simple goal posts.
In a tragic day in late July, a 15-year old girl passed in a freak accident at a local soccer when one of the nets tipped over. The girl was trapped underneath. While her friend was on site to try and rescue her, she was unable to life the net up and opted to call 911, unfortunately the girl died at the hospital.
According to the Toronto Sun:
The soccer field is on property owned by the Portuguese Cultural Centre, but had been handed over to the Town of Bradford West Gwillimbury leisure services to manage and maintain.
Mike O’Hare, manager of parks and property, arrived on the scene later in the afternoon.
“I can’t talk about it,” he said, adding the investigation is ongoing.
“It’s a terrible thing,” O’Hare added. “I’m just sick for the family.”
The park and parking lot at the Portuguese Cultural Centre remained closed to the public for the rest of the evening as police investigated.
Jean Perdigao, with the Portuguese Cultural Centre, said she was concerned because the facility has had an ongoing problem with trespassing, despite locked gates and a “No Trespassing” sign.
The incident could be classified as a freak accident, but there are other similar situations that have happened across North America.
“It’s been recognized for a long period of time that goal posts that are improperly anchored can cause injury and in fact there are several recorded fatalities from falling goal posts,” Charles Tator, a Toronto-based neurosurgeon and founder of Think First Canada, a brain and spinal cord prevention agency, told CBC News.
